Polarimeters are optical instruments utilizing so called polarized light. There are a great number of organic and inorganic substances being “optically active” in their liquid or dissolved state.
Such substances are able to rotate the direction of oscillation of polarized light around a determined angle. This angle of rotation is measured by a polarimeter with highest precision. Thus, a polarimeter will be used to determine the concentration of the optical active substance which is dissolved in an optically inactive liquid.
The measured angle of rotation depends on the nature of the sample (“specific rotation”), the concentration of the optical active components, wavelength of the light, sample temperature and optical path length.

Color is a decisive criterion when evaluating product quality. Fully automatic process refractometer for direct measurement of dissolved solids, process monitoring and control. Principle of the critical-angle refractometer with sapphire prism and high-resolution photodiode array; no influence of color and opacity of the medium on the measuring result. Measuring head made of stainless steel, chemical resistant, food safe, hygienic, for process temperatures up to 120 °C (with connected water cooling) and pressures up to 1 MPa.
The explosion protection version of the process refractometer consists of an intrinsically safe, single-certified sensor, which is installed in the hazardous area. The measuring signals are routed to the non-explosive area via a special cable (maximum length 500 m) and connected to 4 zener barriers. The connection to the central control system is realized with a RTU Modbus or serial RS 485 interface.
Alternatively, Schmidt + Haensch offers a control unit, which is also installed outside the hazardous area. The 7 “touch screen is individually configurable. The measured data can be output via Ethernet as a 24 V or 4-20 mA signal or control a relay.
For data transmission to other systems, serial RS 232, 485 interfaces, a CAN bus or UPC server are available.

The voltage supply for the digital sensor is integrated into the device. The graphic display enables the depiction of the input signals as digits or as a bar graph. The display of the parameters in plain text ensures that the operation is easily understandable and safe.
Two optional relay changeover contacts are used to implement simple switching or alarm functions as well as demanding control tasks with P, PI, PD, and PID behavior. Upon request, the device is also available with 2 analog outputs (0 to 10 V or 0/4 to 20 mA) that can be freely parameterized and scaled.
The critical angle refractometer ATR-P is especially designed for applications in the sugar industry. Complete system consists of the ATR-P measuring head and the “L-Controller” electronic unit. As an alternative to the “L-Controller” electronic unit, the ATR-P measuring head can be connected to a PC or laptop. In the minimal version configuration and calibration are performed using a supplied free-software. Much more comfortable and is the PC software “Aquisys Basic”.
